July 17, 2004 EAA Chapter 110 Meeting Minutes
The meeting was called to
order by President Mike Reynolds at 9:30 am
at the Wings of History
Museum, South Martin CA. All chapter
officers
were present.
1. New Business
a. New
attendees, (and new members to our chapter), at today’s
meeting were Jim Doherty and
his wife Mary. They are building an
Odyssey aircraft and are in
the waiting list for a hangar at
Watsonville. Currently their hangar is a trailer. They are also in
the market for an engine for
the Oddysey.
b. Mike
Reynolds announced that he had moved to Carson City NV and
would therefore not be able
to continue serving as Chapter President.
Earlier in the day the
Chapter Board had appointed John Feemster, the
current Vice President to serve the remainder of Mike’s
term.
c. Mike also
announced that George Watson had been appointed by
the board to replace John
Feemster as Vice President.
d. A discussion
was held on changing the time and location of the
monthly meetings. Several of the current officers were unable
to
consistently attend the
Saturday morning meetings. It was also
pointed
out that the Saturday
morning meetings conflicted with prime flying
time, especially in the Summer
months. Some members preferred to keep
the meetings on Saturday
mornings. It was suggested that we hold
the
formal meeting on Friday
evening and have an informal gathering to
transfer information at the
airport on Saturday mornings. A motion
was
made and seconded to change
the time to 6:00 pm on the third Friday of
the month and location of
the meeting to be, tentatively, the RHV
terminal Bldg. Motion carried by a vote of 9 to 6. Mike Reynolds will
set up the location and
notify everyone of the new time and location.
e. The EAA
announcement concerning the release of the Sport Pilot
rule from the OMB to the FAA
was read to the attendees.
f. The Overfelt
HS Aviation Academy lost it’s funding and is
closing down. They have a non-airworthy Cessna 182,
(damaged spar),
that will be donated to our
chapter. Mike Reynolds will be
disposing
of the parts via E-Bay and
will transfer the proceeds to our Treasury.
g. The Genisis
aircraft project at Independence HS will not be
allowed to fly according to
the new district Superintendent and HS
Principal. This is counter to the stated objectives by
the old
officials to build and fly
the aircraft. These objectives were the
prime motivation for several
of our chapter members to volunteer a
significant number of hours
to help/teach the students to build the
aircraft. The estimate of the value of EAA member’s
time on the
aircraft project is
$100,000.00. The district plans to
destroy the
aircraft. The chapter feels that this is very wrong,
and breaks the
implied contract with the
volunteers who would not have participated in
the project if they did not
believe that the aircraft would be
completed and flown. A Mechanic’s Lien against the aircraft has
been
prepared by the chapter and
will be served asap. In addition, the
chapter will hire a lawyer
to bring suit against the district if they
do not live up to their
previously stated commitment regarding the
project.
h. A motion was
made and seconded to use some of the revenue from
the sale of the Cessna 182
parts to fund the retention of a lawyer.
John Feemster said that he
may have a lawyer who could do the work pro
bono. The motion was changed to retaining a lawyer
and it was seconded
and passed unanimously.
i. Rusty Wells
and Mike Reynolds are taking a truck to Oshkosh to
pick up some wings for
Rusty. They will also stop in Illinois
to pick
up Dieck’s CGS Hawk and
bring it back to Dieck’s widow so that she can
eventually fly it. She is currently taking lessons from John
Feemster.
A motion was made and seconded for the chapter to contribute $100
to
Mike and Rusty for fuel
costs to bring the Hawk back. It passed
unanimously and the fund was
augmented by contributions of cash from
the membership.
j. There was
some discussion about how we will be able to fill in
the gaps left by the High
Schools stopping the projects to educate our
youth in aviation. It was suggested that if we had a hangar to
serve
as a meeting place for
interested youth, volunteers, pilots and
aircraft owners then we
might be able to do a better job of meeting our
goals. (flying Young Eagles, aircraft building projects, aviation
scholarships and airplane construction projects, etc.). Watsonville
has a good hangar and we
need to see how they were able to get it
built. Aerospace Alliance is an organization that
may be able to help
get us obtain a grant if we
have a plan. John Feemster will follow
up.
k. John
Feemster presented an excellent Tech Talk on coordinated
flying and coordinated
turns. It was well received and there
was some
excellent discussion on the
topic
Mike Reynolds closed the
business meeting at 11:00.
