April 17, 2004 EAA Chapter 110 Meeting Minutes

The meeting was called to order by Vice President John Feemster at 12:30 pm as Mike Reynolds was stuck in Nevada due to bad weather.  This meeting was held at Hollister in John Gould’s hangar after a morning of flying and aircraft maintenance.  Some members left before the meeting convened.

  1. Old Business:
    1. John asked Vaughn McIlrath if he had any information concerning the liability of a LLC for aircraft ownership.  Vaughn said no but he would take it as an action item for the next meeting.
    2. Don Wiggin asked if there was any news on the Sport Pilot program.  John replied that he had no news but recommended that if any ultralight pilots wanted to be grandfathered in they had to solo before the new regulation went into effect.  They would then need 40 hours of flying time to qualify for the Sport Pilot license.
    3. Lou Janis asked if there was any news from Santa Clara County management regarding the adoption of the proposed ultralight rules for flying at South County airport.  John Feemster took it as an action item to find out before the next meeting.
  2. New Business
    1. John Gould reported that the hangar allocation list for South County’s new construction hangars was complete.
    2. Don Wiggin was featured in a San Jose Mercury News article concerning his homebuilt Tundra aircraft and his pursuit of his flying certificate at the age of 87.  It was a good article and apparently accurate.
    3. Upcoming events:

                                                               i.      Paso Robles is holding an ultralight fly-in during May 14-16.

ii.      Pacific Dream Machines will be held at Half Moon Bay airport on April 25.

iii.      Wings of History fly-in will be held at South County airport on May 1 and 2.  There will be breakfasts and lunches and various activities.

    1. George Watson and his wife (Gloria?) both took demo rides in one of the Hollister based P-51 Mustangs before the meeting started.  They both enjoyed their rides and their were lots of envious members.
    2. Wings of History is going to erect a memorial to Dieck and Jim Riley.  It is not known what it will be.
    3. Harold Marchant visited the Turlock ultralight field and brought back information on three ultralights that are currently for sale.  Mike Arndt shared the information at the meeting, the aircraft included a Falcon, a Beaver and a Kolb Ultrasport.  Prices were in the $5500-$6500 range.
    4. The chapter has taken over Bill Dieck and Jim Riley’s hangar at Hollister.  It still houses Jim’s aircraft.  It was planned to use the hangar to house the Independence High School aircraft while it undergoes completion and flight testing.  Unfortunately it appears that the high school administration is throwing roadblocks in front of Mike Reynold’s attempt to complete the project.  This was news was not well received as several members have contributed significant time and money to this volunteer project for the students to learn aviation theory and techniques.  It was suggested that we contact the San Jose Mercury writer who wrote the Don Wiggin article to get some publicity on this issue and the student/volunteer project in general.  John Gould took the action item to get this done.
    5. John Gould reported that the hot dogs were ready so the meeting was adjourned and hot dogs were consumed
