March 20, 2004, EAA Chapter 110 Meeting Minutes

The meeting was called to order by Vice-President John Feemster at 9:30 am. 23 people attending.

1.      No acceptance of the minutes from last month’s meeting, as the Secretary was unavailable.

2.      Treasurer: Currently we have a little over $3300 in the treasury, thanks to an anonymous donation of $3000.

3.      We’ve taken over Deke’s hangar at Hollister.

4.      NEXT MONTH’S MEETING: We’ll start at 8:00 am with flying activities, with our regular meeting later, including a barbeque. Come to the Weatherly hangar, Sat., April 17.

5.      New members and guests:

Greg. RC flyer and student.

Mike and Colleen. Flightstar pilot and crew chief.

Jim Shaw. Pilot. Time in Cessnas and recently a Citabria. Interested in UL’s.

Seyed. Jim Shaw’s friend.

Bill Dennison. Pilot. Recently tried hang-gliding. Interested in building an aircraft.

Jack. RC pilot and instructor. Member of the “Tomcats” – a radio-controlled group that meets and flies just north of Q99. Has walked away from at least one crash.

Welcome to all of you. (Guessing at spelling of names - hopefully close.)

6.      Round Robin:

George Nicholson:  Mike Reynolds’ “Space Tech” program is in jeopardy due to lack of matching funding from the school district. The airplane built by students and several volunteers from our group is stuck at the school. The school will not allow it to be moved because of fear of liability. There was discussion about that.

John Gould:  San Jose State may donate an aircraft (to us) soon. It’s a One-Of-A-Kind, designed and built by students. It’s a single-place, Part 103 ultralight.

Gary Fox:  Paso Robles is holding their ultralight fly-in again this summer. Here’s the info: May 14 – 16; EAA UL Chapter 93 Paso Robles Fly-In,Paso Robles PRB Contact Information: Paul Cummings 805-438-3655 Email Address: vdrivedenis@juno.com.

By the way, Gary says that the airplane that he is building is a “Zing, GF Modified”.

Robert Smith: Oakland Castlemont High School is forming 3-4 academies, thanks to funding donated by Bill Gates’ foundation. One of the academies will be “Aviation Technology”. Could be that this is useful info toward Mike R’s lack of funding situation?

Mike Arndt:  Raised the question, that since we lost Deke as our link to the USUA, do we still have a connection to USUA. Dave Hilpert volunteered to fill that position. Thank you, Dave!, and Mike.

Dave Hilpert:  His T-Bird is down, getting a new prop. Dave stirred discussion on possible group ownership of an aircraft through forming a Limited Liability Corporation (LLC).  Vaughn will check into how an LLC works.

Don Wiggins:  Needs a CFI to fly with him in his Tundra (N-numbered) so he can make the transition from Cessna student pilot to Tundra student pilot.

Bob Meuse:  Discussion on how to get the Isuzu engine in the Tundra to run right.

John Gould:

1.      Wings of History Cinco de Mayo event will happen on May 1st and 2nd. John asked for volunteers. If you can help out, contact John. Gould42@aol.com

2.      John and Lou Janis are making part-ownership in their Challenger available. Note that itqualifies as a Sport Pilot type aircraft.

3.      For new people looking at joining our EAA club, the dues are $20 per year.

John Feemster:

1.      He is making a computer available to the club, to run flight-simulation software, useful for some aspects of training.

2.      There are ultralight instructors available at Watsonville, Turlock, and Lodi. Also there is an instructor near Sacramento, Ray Mello (spelling?), who has a 100-hp Rans, and trains instructors. Check our website, www.aerodromehq.com, for a list of instructors and how they can be reached.

3.      Note that upon publishing of the Sport Pilot Ruling, there will be a 3-year period during which hours logged in ultralights can transfer toward a Sport Pilot rating.

Lou Janis: Brought up the value of Ground School, igniting discussion on the club’s sponsoring a second ground school course. Also, Lou asked if we can push toward finalizing an agreement with the County of Santa Clara, opening South County Airport to ultralight operation.

The meeting was closed at 11:05 am.
