John Feemster conducted a training session on Safety Procedures. He posed the question: What do you do if you flying from Hollister to Watsonville without and operational radio and Watsonville is socked in so you divert to Marina and Marina is socked in and you are low on fuel and can’t get back to Hollister?
The answer is fly to Salinas, which is towered airport and is close by, and then use the accepted procedures for following the tower’s light signals.
John reminded everyone to contact the tower after successfully landing and explaining your emergency.

Jim Doherty introduced our special quest, Mark Beierle the designer and developer of the Earthstar Aircraft, the builders of the Odyssey and Gull aircraft. Mark and Jim had flown Mark’s Odyssey from Santa Margarita to Hollister in the morning, where several Chapter members examined the aircraft and talked with Mark, and then Mark and Jim flew it to South County.
Mark gave an excellent off the cuff presentation on the aircraft that he builds and the new engine that he is developing. His aircraft kits have a 6 6o 8 week lead time, and complete aircraft have a 1 1/2 year lead time. The kits are not approved as 51% kits but the builders have not had any problem certifying them as experimental aircraft. The website for more information on the aircraft is Thundergull.com
Mark also talked about the new engine that he is developing. It is a 2 stroke radial engine with cam operated pistons so it does not require connecting rods. It weighs 72 pounds complete and produces the same power as a Rotax 503. The engine sounds very interesting and more information is available at Rad-Cam.com
Mark answered a number of questions about the built in BRS chute on the Odyssey, the Rad-Cam engine and its exhaust system, the design of the aircraft and several other topics. Mark made the aircraft available at Two Genes FBO for chapter members to inspect.
John Gould reminded members to pay their 2005 dues.
John Feemster asked about the next chapter election of officers and suggested that more members get involved and run for office.
A representative from Chapter 119 at Watsonville invited members to attend their meetings which are held the first Tuesday of the month at 7:30 in their clubhouse. It is located near the fuel station and has EAA and WAEC signs.
The meeting was adjourned 3:20 pm so members could go see Mark’s Odyssey before he had to return to Santa Margarita. The plan was to reconvene and hold athe round table discussion but your humble secretary had to leave at that point and could not stay for the discussion.
Respectfully submitted,
Rich Grialou, Secretary
