EAA Squadron CX and USUA
155, Nov 15, 2003, Meeting Notes:
EAA Squadron 110 Business;
Mike Reynolds:
Announcement: Deke Deick is the newly electedl Executive Director of The Wings of
History. Congratulations Deke!!
Raffle: The first item of business was the raffle as a fund-raiser, to sell
the Kitfox. During a very brief discussion, George Watson offered to buy the
airplane for $25,000. The matter was almost immediately moved, seconded, and
unanimously approved. Whew! Done deal. Thank you, George!

(I must insert here that my technology fell apart – the tape didn’t work. These notes are from my own scribbles, with a little help from friends. If they’re missing something important, let me know. –VM)
Christmas Party: Next month’s meeting will be held on Friday night, the 19th
of December, at the Wings of History Hangar, at 7:00 pm. There will be no regular
meeting for December.
Please come, bring friends and food. There will be some effort by someone to coordinate the food. Stay tuned.
Aero Expo: Moffett Field. December 8 – 10. Mike Reynolds.
Scholarship Pool: The club will give financial support to a scholarship fund for
students. After our meetings, we will have a lunch, in the Weatherly Hangar at
Hollister. We will charge some small fee for lunch, with the proceeds going
toward a scholarship fund. Mike R. will appoint a committee to expedite this.
Logo: Hal
Erpenbeck, John Gould, and Vaughn McIlrath have been working on a Logo for EAA
110. It’s in very initial stages right now and needs help. The idea is to come
up with something that can be used as a patch on clothing, as a letterhead,
etc. that would represent the club. Send any ideas you may have to Vaughn mcilrath@pobox.com.
Awards: Mike R. presented awards to John Gould, Lou Janis, Dave Hilpert, and
Vaughn McIlrath. John Gould presented one to Mike Reynolds. All in recognition
of work over the past year.
USUA 155 BUSINESS; Deke Deick:
Sport Pilot: Any time logged in either the Quicksilver or the GT 500 will be able to
count toward your Sport Pilot rating. If you’re a new student with no flight
time, you will be required to log a minimum of 20 hours flight time; take a
written examination; and take a check ride with an instructor, to be rated as a
Sport Pilot.
You will be able to get insurance on your aircraft, and
you can fly a passenger.
The Sport Pilot rules are still in the Dept. of
Transportation. Then, after finishing there, will go on to the Office of
Management and Budget. The OMB will likely take another 90 days, so we’re
looking now toward March, or so, of 2004.
If you have a Basic Flight Instructor rating, you will be
grandfathered-in as a Sport Pilot Instructor.
To get a BFI rating:
40 Hours flight time as a
BFI student.
FAA exam on the fundamentals
of instruction.
Check ride with an AFI
(Advanced Flight Instructor).
USUA exam on flight
fundamentals.
Time logged as a Sport Pilot will count toward a Private
license.
Copperstate Fly-In: The Copperstate Regional Fly-In is held in October
near Phoenix, AZ, with the intent to become the Oshkosh of the west. You can
check info on the 2003 event at http://www.copperstate.org/index.htm.
South County Airport (Q99): The South County management still is not friendly;
however, those days are numbered. Here’s the Ultralight pattern for the airport:

The distances are hard to read – they’re each 500’, and
put you about over the freeway on your downwind. Note that you land on the east
Taxiway. Thanks to John Feemster for
the work in getting this established. It’s not published and official yet, but
will be.
(John F. – I agonized over this drawing and then lost quality putting it in here. Yours is much clearer. –VM)
Hollister Airport (3o7): John Feemster and Deke are working on the patterns
for Hollister. There may be two variations, with runways 24 and 31.
The meeting adjourned at 11:30 with several people heading out to
Hollister and to the Ding-A-Ling, then to play with airplanes.
See you at the Christmas Party!
